Note: This is obvious for 99% of people but to clarify: Buying your FIRST mech is one of the most important decisions you will make in MWO.

1) Use your FREE DAY of premium time with your CADET BONUS to get an extra 5 million cbills, 10 million vs 15 million cbills in your first 25 matches (Thank you TANKBOYKEN for this info: http://themittani.co...our-cadet-bonus )
2) Choose your first mech chassis based on what you think you will like to play for the next 2 - 4 weeks.
3) Remember, if you have the time to play consistently 2-3 hours per day, Premium Time of 1 month is the best MC investment you can make.
4) If you are spending MC, the Champion mechs are the best value (vs stock mech plus cbill upgrades.)

Module Ranking


1. Seismic Sensor – 250m of “wall-hacking” is an unfortunate addition to the game: over-powered. I truly believe this module should be removed or only active when a mech has been stationary for a full 2 seconds.

### Will be nerfed in November.###

2. Cool Shot – More important in tournament than solo queue. Reset your heat when needed.

3. Target decay – 3.75s; I feel this is more useful than 360 when chasing one on one, but it's a personal preference

4. Advanced Sensor Range – 25% increase in sensor range.

5. Capture Accelerator – 15% increase; more useful in solo queue than tournament play (depending on tactics)

6. Target Info Gathering – 25% increase speed in getting information sooner - important on light assassins such as the SDR-5D where you need to focus fire on vulnerable locations to get a kill.

7. 360 Target Retention – Very useful following lights but if you're a light you might find target decay works well enough

8. Advanced Zoom – newly improved; it looks fantastic. How useful for sniping is up to the individual pilot. There is some lag to the crosshairs when using it.

XX. Artillery Strike – Priority Air Strike - This has become very useful for light mechs which can drop a signficant amount of damage to a group of enemies. Less useful for slower mechs.


XX. UAV – See ECM-cloaked mechs in a limited area for a limited period of time: very specific to your team’s composition and tactics. A light mech dropping this on an enemy group can make a huge difference! I don't want to rank this module because it's so situational - so teams may find it works for them, other teams may not need it, etc. etc.

These are my top 5 modules for these scouts / assassins. As the COM-2D uses streaks, I would use Target Decay or 360 Target Retention over Target Info Gathering. For the RVN-3L this is a more difficult choice.

- Brawler (examples: JR7-F, RVN-3L, CN9-A, HBK-4P, AS7-DDC)

the CPLT-C1 is not a bottom tier mech, i constantly put up more or on par damage to folks in jump snipe CTF-3D's, less firepower at range (no gauss), more in med/close (srms+ML), overall it's a playstyle that dictates if a mech is high or low tier, but the stats and hardpoints do make a difference, and i hope the list is more leaning towards the more versatile/capable mechs then the playstyles currently associated with them.

Makes me wonder - what did the 5J do to be higher up on the list than 7M? that one extra energy and one less missile hardpoint make that much of a difference? And why is the 3C nowhere near the top?


Apparently, the elitist have spoken - play an ECM/poptart, or don't play at all.
Tried watching the vid, but that voice is unbearable after 3 minutes of skipping, let alone over 2h.

This a competitive tier list - not soloq - not whatever you like.. but what are the top mechs for competitive tournament play... ie. super-elitist, play-to-win and crush-your-opponent gaming.

The C1 is crap. The 7M is a waste of money for poor new players who will have to switch out the engine. If the video skips, get a better connection.

Carrying a game with ppc+gauss combo is easy mode right now. You nearly don't progress at all in easy mode every gamer know that.

You do what you want but I'll continu carrying game and brawling assault sniper that dont know how to brawl with my C1 2A lrm15 3ml or my pay2loose YLW AC20 till they are buffed.

And when I will must use them in 8v8 you will die in a ball of fire because I had to compensate their lack of effectiveness so unlike you I will use them at full potential.

But you do what you want, you're free to play what everybody is playing. My way of playing the game can be frustating but you learn a lot.

Fascinating - you put the Cicada-3M as best medium? It'd be interesting if you ranked it and the other 'cadas against the lights, as that's a more accurate way of assessing their relative effectiveness in their role for everyone's favorite honorary light.

This is a great point.

It is ranked no 1... because it gives a team an ECM advantage.. which in competitive play is huge.. but that doesn't mean it's 2x better than a centurion.. it's just ranked higher... it's a great mech...

Awesomes are not great.

Why are the 2x and 4x higher on the list than all commandos but the 2D? I was under the impression that the ravens were terrible, I didn't think the commandos were that bad.

You completely missed the point, these are the ones you play to win, not to have fun with, or learn alot(as those are subjective factors).

Also, when it will finally be in need, the good players will learn to brawl in a week better than you did in months(if they don't already).

Mechs are just wrappers to convey damage... As playstyle, skill, and technical gear is personal, bring a mech that allows you to convey the maximum consistent damage levels in a match...

Some mechs are better than the rest but what you will find out is that on average you will be conveying damage at the same levels irregardless of chassis.

In short - good players are good, average players are average, and terribads are terribads are terribad - across all chassis types.

the video wasn't skipping - I was. that guy's voice and general way of talking is not something that should be broadcast.

And since this claims to be a competetive list, how is cost a factor here? The price tag does not affect performance, and unless you are planning to use 4 or 5 energy hardpoints, instead of 3E/2-3M, there is no difference between the 5J and 7M.

Sorry, but if this is based on the OP's opinion, it is pretty irrelevant. Currently I pilot a Spider 5D and I can't tell you how many matches I've won for my team. Isn't that enough of a competitive edge? It really depends on what the pilot feels most comfortable driving. I can do huge damage in some mechs over others, but I feel most comfortable in a light. In an 8 man if everyone runs DDCs they will lose nearly every time. If I see a group of DDCs slowly advancing all I have to do is flank and cap because I know no one can catch me. There has to be a mix of different mechs and different capabilities. This will become even more apparent when PGI implements 12 man teams.

only some people still think that it's all about the digital peen size (aka DPS). Chaos is a difficult thing to measure, and light 'mechs excell at chaos.

Also - most of the damage is superflous, unless you do pinpoint damage to only the rellevant locations 100% of the time, and that is a myth.

blowing an arm off a mech does not directly affect its destruction, but how about legging it? If it's an assault, that is helpful, but if it's a light it can be invaluable.

Comparing a RVN-3L and a SDR-5D is like apples and oranges - the 3L is a hunter/striker, while the 5D is a harasser.

If you judge a 5D by its ability to stand toe-to-toe with a JR-7F, you might as well judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree.
