For me, the Heavies do it. Better mobility than an Assault, with decent punch, but a small sacrifice to armor. The Timber Wolf has been a personal favorite of mine due to his excellent loadout capabilities. I can save multiple role variants and play to the style needed.

To this one, I say we are of the same mind...However in the current supposed timeline with the lack of Clan 'Mechs, I fully intend to roll out with a Dragon.

I preferred mediums in Solaris on Gamestorm/AOL and BT:3025, and Heavies in MW4. Not much of an assault person.

I generally prefer Mediums. Assuming they limit starting mechs to ones common in 3049 I'd go with a Spider, Enforcer, Trebuchet, Crusader, Jagermech (LRM variant), or Atlas.

If more rare mechs are available I'd take a Wyvern, Crab, Flashman, Thug, or Highlander.

tl'dr: Gimmie a Flashman! :)

I remember in Battletech: 3025 that came out years ago (the first game to attempt the MMO MechWarrior throne, but not released past beta) most people piloted heavier 'mechs if they could get 'em. That having been said, you had to reach a certain rank before you could pilot heavier ones, but the mechanic just wasn't that fair. You could pick the 'mech you wanted ahead of each battle, and see what you were going to be up against, but it still left you mainly in a race to get the next heavy that you were allowed to pilot.

Mediums or heavies here.. leaning towards the mediums.

Especially if they add melee mechanics and the likes of the Hatchetman.

I'd be willing to pilot a Hollander or Hollander IIC just to pound the hell out of everyone from across the map.

60 tons - Mad Dog (Vulture) is my mech of choice. Totally kicks *** and is very versatile.

My usual suspect Mechs (not including any Clan mechs)...

Light: Raven (35t)
Medium: Uziel (50t)
Heavy: Catapult (65t)
Assault: Awesome (80t) or Atlas (100t)

I usually roll with a Raven or Catapult though.

The day I pilot an assault mech is the day I sell my soul to the Clans. I prefer a balance of speed, firepower and mobility, so I'll be going for the lighter end of medium mechs, or the heavy end of the lights.

Jump jets, ECM and long range weaponry. I won't many kills on big mechs, but I'll be popping legs and disabling weapons from dawn till dusk.

If it is in the game then a nice Grasshopper GHR-5N for a nice mobile heavy with no need to worry about ammo cook-offs or running out of ammo.

I've been Atlas driver for as long as I can remember though I did go a little sour on assaults in MW4 and MW4M due to the prevalence of them which eventually drove me to be a pretty dedicated medium pilot. Big fan of the Blackjack and Enforcer.

60-75 tons has always been my sweet spot.

I could never see myself in one of those slow, cumbersome Assault mechs for more than the lulz. I'll probably be sitting in the Medium/Heavy range.

Medium Mechs are my personal preference. I prefer something with a significant punch that can maneuver out of battle quickly to get behind cover.

In the end though, it's all dependent on my team's tactics and the enemies tactics at that time.

Locust, Wasp, Panther, Assassin, Crusader? I could go on and on as there any number of mechs that aren't assault.
A good Locust pilot can chew up and spit out a Goliath any day.

Look at me, look at my name, now look back at me, now I am riding an Atlas, what is this? It's a lightweight support mech called a Zeus to my right, scouting for me. What does he see? Inferior Draconis scum in superlight mechs such as the Catapult and Marauder. Look at my hand, what is in it? Nothing, it is a fist. I punch these mechs, they all die in a spectacular fashion. The Zeus dies due to it's incredibly weak armor, I still live.

I still live.

50-70 tons here. I prefer maneuverability with decent energy based firepower. The Griffin, the Lancelot, the Wolverine, the Guillotine, or the Warhammer are machines I tend to favor for this time period. I can really live with anything though.

Or die with it, however you want to look at it.

I will joke about recon Atlases all day...

Take a lance of four Atlas and that is recon you need not follow up on. :)

As I said in another thread my favorite Battlemech of all time is the Adder Prime, but I would be just as happy in a Phoenix Hawk LAM PXH-HK2, but since it is almost a sure thing neither one of those will be available to start (and the PXH-HK2 probably never), I will likely bounce around between Mechs until I find one that suits my mood or I feel like pretending I'm Gray Norton, get myself a Rifleman, and call it Legend Killer. If I were to pilot an Assault Mech, it would have to be a Mackie. :D
