Mr. Winters, i'll have to jump in here, im afraid.
I too, have slain Spiders with double gauss.
Its a beautiful experience.
I have butchered them with lasers and missiles and other ballistics too.
However, its not all the time, and its not even sometimes.
There absolutely is something wrong with how the HSR affects these mechs. even if that means its how it "appears" on your side on the internet, thats still an issue.
if i fire a splodge of ultra shots into a spider, and hit once, when i totally hit 3 or 4 times, it could well be that the game is showing me hits, where as that spider is grand. now, thats a problem.
I'm not disputing the fact that there is a problem. And my anecdotal evidence was not intended as a scientific rebuttal. If I wanted to be serious, I would do something like take a screenshot of 100 match results and analyse the effects of spiders, looking both at their average damage and the correlation between winning and having spiders on your team.
Ain't nobody got time fo dat.
However, even without actual numbers to back my claim, I am fairly confident that you'd find that 1) Spiders, on average, tend to do worse than any assault, heavy or medium mech in the game, in terms of damage and kills, and 2) Spiders, on average, have no greater effect than other mechs, in terms of accomplishing victory.
You'd get some very different results if you looked at the effect of having, say, 4 Atlas mechs on a team, both in terms of their damage / kills and in terms of their chances of winning. But I'm not seeing a lot of threads complaining about "Atlai". Because they're supposed to win, right? To me, it seems that getting beaten by the underdog stings a lot more than getting beaten by the top dog.

Saw you in your Catapult last night. I was in your cockpit scratching my head a few times. Till I got what you were doing. You almost turned our loss around on the Volcano map. If our Spider could have hit R a few times or the Raven had both legs you could have had a better chance with your missiles.

If I recall the match you're referring to, then I have to admit that when things are looking awfully gloomy, I just go hunting for easy kills. So a lot of times people will scratch their heads (i.e. insult me), because I'm absorbing damage without engaging the fresh enemy mechs, while trying to get into position to finish the almost dead enemy mechs. It's a last resort, of course - if we're already doomed.
And I distinctly remember swearing a bit when I realized that the guy who killed me (a Jager, I think) had a deep red center torso, which I could easily have destroyed if the Spider had scouted a bit.
I do remember seeing you in a match. Will remember to say hi next time, despite your shortcomings in regards to small laser evaluation.
