Great analysis, but tainted by partial treating of some mechs (like the Hatamoto Chi - why not writing all its variants?).
Also. the Annihilator could have 3 variants, if we count the ANH-1E (field refit, I know...). And the Imp has 4.
The reason I didn't list the extra Hatamoto-Chi variants is because they are only slight refits of an existing variant (kinda like the Highlanders 733, 733C and 733P). While the Highlander has been announce the Hatamoto-Chi has not. That saying if that's the case you can add in the 4+ other variants to that list.

I honestly think it only comes down to the Banshee, Zeus, Victor, King Crab and the Cyclops. I don't see the Charger coming in since it was considered a failed design and not all that useful (not to mention that PGI frowns upon spam tackling) as well as the Hatamoto being an improved Charger.
I see it being either the Banshee, because of the weight gap, or the Zeus for it's iconic history and it's well rounded armament.
With the Victor and Clops being dark horses considering neither fills a niche that is needed or have anything about them to make them stand out. (in my opinion, of course)
The King Crab unfortunately probably won't make it in due to the fact of it's design quirkiness. The silhouette alone makes it a highly dubious choice.
I figured the Shogun as well but again if you look at the notes the only Awesome's currently in produce during the timeline are the AWS-8V and AWS-9M. Obviously we have 3 other variants so they are strictly going by whats produced and appear to be going off by whats been introduced by the time line. I mean look at the Highlander, it's not really being produced at all during this point in the timeline.
Edit: Sorry for the double post. I got confused by the multiple typing windows

Mechs like the Hatamoto-chi and others can work the same way and have just as much chance of getting in even with some variants being similar. Besides, there is only so much diversity as we get more mechs released, including hero variants.

Yes, of course! The Banshee needs his arms to knock out other mechs, like the ugly Guillotine!
Seriously, if we could punch things in MWO, I would be all for the Banshee (the Zeus!!™ too, because punching something with a gun AND then firing would be awesome).
BTW, that's some damn fine multitasking there, lol

The (+X) indicate suggested additional hardpoints.
The variants in italic are iffy variants that maybe should not get into the game.
And sure, the number of modules is just a guess (made to balance the variants).
Iffy variants:
- Banshee BNC-3Q, with all (ballistic) hardpoints concentrated in one torso would be probably awful.
- Zeus ZEU-6Y has one experimental weapon (Binary Laser Cannon), so it will only be in the game if the weapon is added.
- Charger CRG-1L and CGR-SB have the same all-energy loadout as the CGR-1A1 and should probably be left out.
- Cyclops CP-10-HQ has actually a Collapsible Command Console. This equipment could be replaced by a standard Command Console, but the mech would have some spare tonnage. The variant could be replaced by the more common and less problematic CP-10-A-DC.
- Hatamoto HTM-27T is too similar to the HTM27U - a reason for not having it.
EDIT: updated table.
So, looking at this, what mech would you prefer?

Cyclops....
For me, any of them would be fine, but I would prefer the Banshee (not only because of the tonnage, or the fact it didn't make it to any MW, but because it would feel different in game), followed by the Victor (I can't resist dual Gauss + jump).

still the Zeus... pretty much well rounded as it should be
I would be happy with the Zeus, because it's such an iconic mech, but... wouldn't it be much like the Orion?
(not to mention the Zeus is almost a Battlemaster reseen)

PS: I forgot the armor of the CRG-1A5: it is 480.
