It's not even whining. It's a half-completed, poorly scaled map system that removes useful information from the cockpit view and fails to replace it, while presenting it's new information in a format no pilot would sanely be able to read easily while playing. Oh, and it ganks seismic module use too. Despite adding new options, it takes far more away from the operation of a 'Mech than it adds.

It's a War on Information, not Information Warfare.

So, it's the same for everyone, why can't you play without it?

PGI, please don't listen to these nubs. Give it a few weeks so that they may learn and appreciate the pros of this new map.
All this whining is just a sign that some are too dependant on the minimap.

You obviously can't pilot if you can't feel what is now missing.

Nice try....but it's terrible on every level: the big letters for the bases, disintuitive orientation, the colors and terrain, the lack of directionality of the enemy, the movement of enemy is gone, childlike sized letters for map locations, no land features. The whole map is washed out.... so bad, so bad.

The new map makes me sick.... physiologically.
I was going to spend more money....but now don't even want to play.

Big kindergarten letters for map locales really...what a huge step backwards...huge back step....it looks cheap and unprofessional.

The directional arrow:
  • was meant for training new players
  • cannot be seen unless looking mostly downward
  • clips in uneven ground or water
  • breaks immersion... it feels like a cheaty thing.
Not used by me, ever. Find it distracting... obviously, it's turned on now to my great disappointment.

Nah man, look right above your crosshairs when you turn your mech. The more you know.

More and more in the US, driving a manual is a lost skill. Not even really a necessary one, as fast shifting DCT transmissions shift faster than manuals when used by regular, non race drivers.

Why am I bringing this up? Reading a map the old school way is not really necessary these days, unless you lose power...in which case, you've probably got serious problems. Knowing how to navigate the map the old school way is a good backup skill to have but usually impractical in today's society. There's no reason for PGI to implement such a convoluted system when the old way was perfectly fine. It would be like removing HUDs from military jets and forcing pilots to read directly from instrument clusters again. Sure, they could do it and adapt but it's not the most efficient way of doing things.

I'm certainly not going to argue with you in this well thought out point.

For today, for tomorrow for the next week and very likely the next month this what we have to deal with. So until it changes, I wanted to make a thread on the best way to play the game with what we have.

There are, at this posting, 22 threads of complaints about the mini map. It seems the message on dislike it going out loud and clear.

This is what to do in the mean time.

Well you couldn't see the difference between assault and light before either. It's more a tactical think I think to see where to go and attack or defend, not so much what you look at while in the fight.

What I'm saying is that particular "improvement" it was supposed to have is next to useless, but more importantly it's disorienting because the minimap doesn't turn with you.

I dont even know where to start to describe how **** this new minimap is... I have no idea anymore where I am heading, where my team is heading, where me and my team is relative to the enemys, and to make it worse the Icons are so small you cant see anything. Situational awereness is gone, GONE! This minimap is absolutely terrible! How can you even release this? No idea how to play the game with this to be honest...

If it is to push people into using voip and staying grouped then it works in a way......otherwise if looking to set up a crossfire on the new map your stuck.
Eyes forward, shoot things!!
Option to toggle between the old and new mini map would be cool but maybe the zoom will sort it.

I don't know if it's the new map or not, but the games seem much closer, and it's at least logical that maybe the old minimap was TOO easy to use.

Yep. I'd rather remove it altogether than have the old one back. It just takes so much of the game away.

The old minimap and the instant and too good info you get is the reason why:
  • Deathballing works so well
  • TTK is low
  • Stomps happen all the time

So wait, you're saying that the old map let people move as a unit easily and work together to focus down enemies? Any group with microphones can still do that. Everything you are saying about "skill" is nonsense. It takes one person to lead and 11/how ever many others that are willing to follow. That's not skill, its teamwork. With this new garbage, half the squad would get lost en route to the engagement area. Wanting higher skilled matches does not justify nonsensical, useless tools.

The new map is not something that a real futuristic battlegroup would use. If someone tried to give their pilots an engagement radar/map like this he would be fragged or court marshaled for incompetence within a week. That is what the full battlegrid is for. Not engagement range information.

I'm piloting mainly a King Crab which does not have a big window, so your view area is very limited. Therefore, I mainly reply on the minimap to see my position and the position of others. Now I'm totally confused and get killed easily because I do not have a view in which directions the foes are.
I want to have the old minimap back! This week! If not changed back, it will be a reason to stop playing this game!

Hi,

First of all: great game and concept!

However, I find the new minimap not filling the purpose.
Especially that map is not rotating and zoom level far too high
makes it very confusing.

I hope one could select to use the old variant too.
