Thats probably just a perception thing. I seriously doubt the selection is made during the animation. More likely the selection is made and then the animation is played.
I have only opened one and I was OK with what I got. However, if the selection is pre-determined then I could do without the roulette wheel effect. To me, that is the least attractive feature of the cache. It simply does not fit in a MW game, IMO.

The drop rate is so poor, I have no idea why PGI thinks this will become a new revenue stream.
It's like dangling a carrot that's dripping with feces.

The same reason that casinos and sports books have and will continue to exist. There are people will always try to beat the odds. I still occasionally go and play blackjack, even though I know I'm not likely to leave the building with more money than I came in with or, for that matter, any of the money I came in with. As long as I keep in mind that what I walk in with is already lost, it is all in good fun. The fact of the matter is that if this system isn't designed to make more money than it could lose, it is poorly designed.

I also noticed a few people asking for youtube videos.....go look up snuggles time or molten metal. they both posted videos opening 10 or more boxes at once.. and they both got garbage out of them.

mostly cbill purchased items like
6x srm6
1x srm4
6x cbills 250,000
2x ac-5
2x begles things
1x lrm20
3x ac2
mc purches only
1x lucky cat
1x 10 airstrike priority
thing i noticed. IT'S RIGGED.
every time it was about to land on a prime time or mech, or something cool.. it "barely" skips to the next... which turns out to be the worst item in the cache 90% of the time. or it does the opposite, meaning it comfortably lands on the crappy one.
in conclusion
low blow on MWO to make this seems like an even chance of winning something, and turns out to be heavily rigged. thes caches came with the stock sale, but i still feel like i wasted my money.

Liquidating the items would net me somewhere around 9 to 10mil. Selling the caches would have net me 2 mil even with 25 x 25mc saved.
All in all, as long as you want the common drops to build mechs, then this system is works.
I wouldnt mind if the items were drastically improved but mc cost is brought up to 100. Nobody wants an icr ferret arm or clan ac2. The instant gratification doesnt exist for people opening the caches, so I can see why people hate it.

Screen shots because I couldn't remember otherwise, likely the only crates I ever open will be these two.
I got trash, I was offered trash and knew I'd get trash
If you had 3 good things vs 3 crappy things I STILL wouldn't buy a key
If you had 5 good things and 1 bad thing I MIGHT think about getting a key

Most of the mechs I've seen are light, maybe one medium, but now I had one with Executioner, next to a disco ball. I was thinking I obviously get the disco ball since it's right next to nice assult mech. I got some IS AC5 from it. From second cache I got a mechbay. It was really nice as I needed one to buy my third Dire Wolf. Now I don't have to buy MCs with money to get it. So these silly caches as most people refer them to, saved me from 7 dollars
One partticular type of cache comes often to me. It has certain Summoner variant and the all the other possible items are always the same. I've opened it many times and usually got some weapons. With the free MCs gained from some events I bought two more keys and opened the last two caches which were this type I often get, because I was feeling lucky after the spot-on mechbay. From both I got a bear claw, the wheel slides just past the summoner to the bear claw. It's one thing to see it once, to see it happening twice in row...
If I get two more bear claws, I will not open up that particular type of cache ever again. I mostly get weapons from caches. Once I've got a module, I think it was expensive one, but I can't use it as I havent unlocked it yet.

They will be implementing a color coding system soon to show you relative rarities for the different choices, although I'd prefer hard percentages.
If caches really bother you, just sell them for 50k free money!

All Supply caches were awarded, most opened by awarded keys, 3 I bought keys... hook line and stinker.
This game mechanic is a dud. Just gonna sell them from now on.

In every instance, the reward was whatever was the lowest or near lowest possible value in the supply cache. Random weapons are nice, I guess, but they certainly aren't going to inspire me to actually spend real money to buy keys to unlock caches.
Now, I don't really care since I can still sell them to get 50,000 cbills, but from PGI's viewpoint, the current supply cache setup is a total failure since the goal was to encourage us to spend real money to buy keys, and I don't think anyone is going to fall for that since the odds of winning anything actually worth the money spent vs. just selling them for 50,000 cbills is negligible.

I don't think it's "rigged" in that I think the contents of the crate are determined the moment you decide to open them - where you click the spinner or when I seriously doubt has any effect on the outcome. That being said, I can't imagine why PGI decided to set it up so it ALMOST stops on something cool - and then ends up on some trashy. I've seen that with almost every cache, too, and it's idiotic. That type of thing works on Wheel of Fortune because the audience didn't invest anything in the show... and people do get a thrill out of the misfortune of others when they just miss landing on a really good spot on the wheel. But adding that "feature" in so we can basically watch ourselves get screwed over as the supply cache taunts us and then delivers trash? Yeah, that was a dumb decision.

PGI is highly disingenuous at presenting the content in a way that suggests everything has equal odds when in fact, it's more like a roulette where that mech is equivalent of picking the exact number and that SRM2 is you picking the color.
Don't open cache expecting to win the grand prize. Sell it or use keys given to you freely.
People that posts getting good stuff on threads are equivalent of lottery winners announcing their win. Of course a gambling game needs the occasional winners to tempt the masses.

There are rules for even slot machines to display the likelihood of winning the prizes (including scratch tickets IIRC).

Wins:
2 JumpJets class 2
C-Ams
NVA-B-right torso
250,000 c-bills
100,000 c-bills
SHC omnipod of some sort forgot which.
I picked these caches very specifically out of a list of 12+ because they contained a few great prices, a few good prizes, a few meh prizes and little to no crap prizes I did not want. Always ended up with the crap or meh prizes. (Again, I was fine with getting some ballistic weapons or 2x medium pulse or something... couldn't even get that.
My friends have opened a few as well... as for stories... I know both friends have gotten 1 module, however they have also gotten a bunch of crap weapons or omnipods as well.
