I am totally confused.

I have been a IS loyalist for the last 2-1/2 years. Nothing but IS mechs in my Mech Bay.

I bought the Hunchback IIC hero as a lark. Figured that the Grid Iron is total crap, so I may as well try a Clan Hero mech to make up for the lackluster Hero Huchie.

After pressure washing the cockpit and hanging up an air freshener to get rid of Clanner stink, decided to take it out for a test run. First match 3 kills. Second match 2 kills. This thing is awesome. I already have 8 SP in 4 matches. Nothing in the IS has been this good....

Now what do I do? This mech is everything that the Grid Iron is not. Am I going to the dark side? Do I need to clone myself and be a vat born?

I'm so conflicted....

Closet Clanner confirmed.

Yet another "Clans OP" thread....disguised of course but one just the same.

First, Grid Iron sucks so you taking a Bottom Tier IS mech and comparing it to a Top Tier Clan mech. Why it would surprise anyone that the Clan mech performs better is beyond me but this is hardly surprising as it is what most IS purists do to prove just how OP Clans are.

Second, the events we had since the new tech dropped pretty much proved that there really isn't much if any tech advantage going one. During the first event right after the new tech dropped, IS suddenly and miraculously (or maybe not so miraculously) dominated for the first time ever in FW. I played both side during that event and it was a massive struggle to succeed as a Clan player during that time period while playing IS was a complete walk over more often than not. The reason is simple, everyone was enthralled with the new IS tech (cause Clans really got diddly squat) and joined the IS side for that first event. The second event went back to Clans being dominant simply because the new had worn off the IS tech so everyone went back to the faction they were playing before.

Third - IS has some exceptionally powerful mechs in its arsenal. The Bushwalker for example is extremely powerful. Warhammers, Marauders, Annihiliators, etc are very good as well. They are easily equal to or better than anything the Clan fields in fact there is not one Clan assault that can win One vs One against an Annihilator.

So please stop claiming all things Clan are better, it just isn't true.

weirdly during the event I saw several people running Grid Irons with AC20s... which was a bit head scratching since the GI is mediocre at best with an AC20 has about half the quirks the 4G gets with it.

But...well... MWO. taters will be taters.

Ahaa... clearly it must all be in your head, IS mechs are just as good as any clan mech. And after the new tech IS is clearly the superior side.

edit: Well, that's what many clan players say anyway.

The Deathwish is probably the worst possible Hunchback IIC you can get, with the B being close behind.

Weird that that mech would be the one you pick and just happen to go on killing sprees with. What IS mechs are you using to not be able to push out 2-3 kills a match when you can in the Deathwish though?

There are only 2 IS mechs that I can have consistent damage and kills with. They are the Urban Mech 60L and the Marauder 3R. I usually have really good matches in them, but they didn't level really quickly at first and I was lucky to get kills in them at first.

I do have good games in pretty much any IS mech that has dakka. I lead targets well....

I know that the GI is a mediocre mech. I've sold the free one after trying to level it extremely unsuccessfully. it didn't matter what build I put in the thing, it just didn't work for me. The 4G and the 4SP are two of my favorites, even though I haven't run them in awhile. With new tech, they hold up pretty well still, especially with LFE and LF armor. Heck, I may even run the 4H as a LRM boat during the promised LRMaggedon.

I think what makes the Deathwish good for me to run is the high mounted weapons on a relatively short mech. Being able to put 2 high damage weapons that I can fire without exposing a bunch of my mech is working.

Ever try a Warhammer? Imagine a Marauder 3R but your cockpit is higher mounted so you don't expose as much, your arms can be used as shields, and you have the option to run big guns in both the side torsos rather than just one.

This build just drags in results for me: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...6df91f06d2682ec

Battlemaster also has some top notch laser based builds for exposing very little of itself to fire.

If a Grid Iron is all you have, every ballistic looks like a Gauss Rifle. I can tell you, if my 4G was a standard one and not a Founder model, I would have dumped it and reclaimed a MechBay as soon as I won a Gird Iron, quirks or not.

Honestly, as far as 'tater' builds go, a Grid Iron with an AC/20 really isn't that bad. I've run far worse during this event.

I've never understood the roleplaying mindset that people have where they think they can only play one faction or the other. Play whatever mech you want whenever you want; all the matters is that you contribute to the team.

Get a MAD IIC. 9mpl. A lot of DHS. Fire them 4/5. It's so much better than any IS assault you'll keep expecting to get reported for cheating.

Get a Deathstrike. 2gauss, 4cermls. Blaze through the enemy with a couple of shots at 500m, before most IS mechs are even hitting foe 1/2 the damage you are. Laugh insanely as you blast out a near 60 pt alpha for piddling heat with insane precision and high mounts while keeping good speed and mobility.

Get an EBJ. 2 HLLs, 5 cermls. Shoot people for 67 damage at 500m, feel almost confused at how manageable that massive heat load is thanks to your bazillion dhs.

Then lose a ST on any of them and just slow down a bit. Because you'll have a crap ton of free tonnage without the crippling negative of death on ST loss.

Yes. Clan mechs are flat out better. It was much closer before Skill Tree but now? Yeah. Flat out better.

Those builds though.

What are you running on the Ebon Jaguar to not have free tonnage left over with 5 ERML and 2 HLL. Also why even buy a Deathstrike if you're not running 6 lasers on it like everyone else and just using 4 ERML?

This is correct. Las-vomit Clan mechs tend to have 1/3 more external DHS than that of las-vomit IS mechs--thanks to CXL > LFE, and 2 slot CDHS > 3 slot IS DHS. Which means Clans can run just as cool as IS, while having bigger alphas. The gap has widened more recently thanks to heat containment skill now factoring in heatsinks.
this skill isn't doing much. My hbk2c still spikes over 80% on a alpha (2hll 6erm)

Whoops. I was looking at my non-hero one with only 4 energy. Also my ebj has a tc and dhs out the wazoo. Also one with 5 mpls and 2 HLLs.

You run 6 ermls and 2 Gauss on Deathstrike. Cuz 72 alpha.

I run that on my not-deathstrike but it's a lot hotter. I assume you mean HMLs not ermls to get to 94?

4 ERML = 28 damage
2 HLL = 36 damage
2 gauss = 30 damage
94 damage

For 94 damage with HML you'd have to use
4 HML = 40 damage
2 LPL = 24 damage
2 gauss = 30 damage.

Range and cooldown synergy is just not there.

Wouldn't use HML for this because the range is lower, HLL+ERML pair up nicely for 400+ meter alphas anyway.

Feels like cheating, doesn't it?

There's a reason a lot of top-level players play Clan. Now, there's good and bad 'mechs on both sides, but the Omnipod system, superior space and weight for Clan weapons and upgrades, and their massively superior XL engines make Clans a superior option, even if you assume rough balance parity for the guns.

The good news is that PGI is still looking at balance numbers; the bad news is that they may be thinking that the Clans' superior performance telemetry is due to veteran players adopting Clantech. This puts the cart before the horse, since Clan technology hasn't been overperforming since release because veteran players (many of whom are long-time fans of the franchise) wanted to play Clans - rather, veteran players have gravitated toward the Clans because the tech is better.

So keep your Inner Sphere 'mechs and have fun with them - but don't be ashamed to pick up Clantech as well. If anything, your playing both tech sets will give PGI better telemetry about how the factions actually perform. =)

Now if only the game used lore-friendly Clan and IS formations and tailored them to the proper game modes. But, no, we get this 1:1 nonsense.

Here is a hint, folks: It's the wrong IP to insist on 1:1. But I guess delusions of eSpurts are completely blinding people.

Someone put an AC20 in a GI and then complained about how it sucks compared to an HBK-IIC?

Something is really smelly.

Did you not get the memo? Faction affiliation is a seriously important life choice.

That is just 80 damage.
