I save them as I haven't needed to sell them and a number of them have mechbay chances, which I don't need right now but may in the future.

if you do burn em its important to target the caches with the 50mc prize as you stand a good chance of winning those (at least if your goal is to get mc). i dont expect the refund to be greater than face value and sure enough when i burned all the keys i came out ahead of what the potential refund would have been. however ymmv.

I open them only with event-got keys, and don't spend much MC on them..
This might change if they rework them as they promised, but PGI promises many things.. and delivers few..

I've opened about 35 boxes so far, no regrets.

Here is the solid post you are looking for:

"Also currently planned to release alongside Solaris, the current Supply Cache system will be undergoing significant revisions aimed at making the Caches more accessible and more rewarding.
Rather than viewing the contents of each Cache prior to opening, and then receiving only one of the included items, the new system is geared at providing you with all the items within the Cache but without the ability to see its contents prior to opening.
We will also be phasing out the Supply Cache Key system altogether; if you have a Cache in your inventory you'll simply be able to open it and get the goods, with no key or additional requirement needed.
You can expect more details regarding the new Cache system, along with details regarding the transition from the existing Cache and Key system to the new Supply Cache system, as we near its release next year."
Basically the most logical approach boils down to this:
Unless you are in dire need of cbills (the only thing you will get reliably from caches) don't open or sell them yet. You can do this at any time, why not wait until we get more information about the mentioned transition?
Since they refunded free mc-consumables gained by events with their full mc-value upon introducing the skill-tree, chances are very high they will do this with cache keys as well. Maybe they even transition your old caches to the new (maybe better) system?
Sure you can gamble on getting more mc out of the boxes by opening the good ones, but you can still do this at any time. No need to take action before having the most possible information.

I disagree. Mechs are basically just cbills (though quite a lot) with a mechbay attached. The 500mc and 1000mc prizes are MUCH more valuable because they allow you to buy things you can't get by pure free playing like hero mechs. Cbills however will amass like crazy once you gained enough experience in the game. Not to mention that hero mechs are cbill-generators.
A hero-mech you like financed through cache-mc winnings will bring in multiples of what a chache-mech is worth over time. So if you want to open caches for value my advice is to open the mc-ones, not those with the mech.
