So many mech babbys will be sad when they realize you can barely customize omni mechs beyond pre-configured omni-pods.
SO if you get a hard on for a complex mech-bay, min-maxing and trying varied and exotic builds then clan Omni's will leave you disappointed.
Umm, in TT, if you've got the space(crits), and you've got the tonnage, you can do it. Omni's are extremely flexible, and that was (part of) why they were so nasty.
However, then that leaves mechs capable of ridiculous min/max. So I agree that this is not possible in a balanced video game.
I'd be willing to bet large amounts of money that PGI wil NOT allow Omni's to be customized to player's desire.
They're going to sett the various premade designs (Prime, Alpha, etc) as variants, just like the current systms,, maybe with a bit more (but not much) freedom. (If it were up to me, I wouldn't allow Armor increases/reduction, Heat sink, Ferro, or Endo changes to omnis, but allow them more freedom with weapons changes this would give them a different flavor, but allow some balancing)
There are several reasons.
1. If Omni's were truly omni, PGI could only sell one of each omni to players. (This is the most important in terms of ENSURING Omnis won't be truly omni)
2. Truly omni mechs would be ridiculously overpowered. (eg Daishi with 4 UAC-20s... It could one shot
anything)
3. The clans typically used the Prime, Alpha, etc system, probably for material replacements rather than inabilty to set mechs however they wanted. Minor changes were pretty common in the books however (eg Pulse replacing an ER, etc)
I do hope that Omnis have a different feel to them, The clans have developed offence (firepower) much more than they'd developed Defence (armor/surviveability, though both were at higher levels than Inner Sphere tech of course) It would be nice if clan mechs SOUND different inside (ie different sounding engines) if their weapons sound different, etc, they should sound higher tech.
